Revising the GAME...

I think the GAME plan is moving along well. I currently am using various websites that I’ve come across with my students. I think the GAME plan is moving along well. Our grade level was introduced to videos that are on Discovery Ed. (our district’s testing site sponsored by Discovery) I am not too familiar with it besides where to go when we test our students. We are supposed to get more training this summer. The videos provide great supplement to our teaching, whether introducing or closing out a unit. A video is more engaging than a stack of worksheets.

I just attended training on using a Mimio. I am excited about the opportunities it gives in teaching the students. Unfortunately, there is only a handful available at my school. There is a waiting list and we can then have it for a month. I definitely put my name on the list. Until I get one, I want to do a little more research on the ways I can use it with my students.

I am not ready to set a new learning goal. I want to accomplish my current goals before I start on a new one. I am going to take what I have learned and keep learning so I can be more effective at integrating technology.

  1. I love to use the Mimio with my kindergarten groups. They really enjoy the "work" they are doing. Fortunate for me and my students, nobody else uses they Mimio - I am able to have it in my room as long as I need it! Sadly, other teachers are not using it to benefit their own students and lessons. I agree with your idea that technology is more engaging than worksheets. After a technology lesson (we worked on CVC words and letter sounds on the Mimio), one student made the comment that we didn't do any work we just did fun stuff. Of course, I went over the "stuff" we worked on - letter sounds, phonics. Enlightening!

  2. Hi Tracy,
It sounds like your GAME plan is working well. Having the Mimio for a month should provide plenty of opportunity to explore its possibilities (though perhaps with a long waiting list 2 week intervals would allow more teachers access.)

I agree--I always like to accomplish the goal I'm working on before beginning another though sometimes I'll mentally flesh out a new goal in my mind to keep me motivated to complete the existing one.

    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Hi Tracy,

I think your GAME plan is working out great. I am SO jealous that your district is using Mimio. I have not had much experience with it, but have heard "through the grapevine" that my district's Assistant Superintendent wants to adopt its use. What Mimio products does your district currently have? I understand that there are an array of tools for classroom use.

    Super Jealous,
    Kristina

  4. I haven't really had any experience with the Mimio - I will look it up and research it some. Is it a form of an interactive white board?

  5. The Mimio turns your whiteboard into an interactive one. I was excited to see the possibilities of using one. My dreaming bubble popped when I found out there are only 10 in the school and we have to wait our turn. I plan on learning more this summer to see what I can use with my students. There are templates as well as blank ones where you can create lessons.

The teacher showed us a calendar lesson where students dragged the months, days, and numbers onto a calendar. The students also did attendance by answering a survey and putting their names in the correct spot.

The site was mimioconnect.com where I believe you can download the software if you have a mimio. I was told you do not need a disk. I am planning on looking more into it over the next few weeks.

  6. Hi Tracy,
It sounds like the videos will be a great supplement to your teaching. Do these offer extra insights or will they just be a way to tie everything together? You may want to consider how you could make more of the video than just viewing - possibly an activity that goes with it or something else?

  7. I use Discovery Ed also. The videos are a great support and enhancement - really effective for EL students. One teacher at our school has said that she can;t imagine teaching without it anymore. I know that there is more that can be done with it - again the time thing.
